Formally known as the California Comprehensive Sexual Health and HIV/AIDS Prevention Education Act (Approved October 2015).

Now, Sexual Health and HIV Prevention is the mandate
Revises HIV prevention education content:
Schools not permitted to require an active parental "opt in".

Purpose of Policy Change:

Provide pupils with the knowledge and skills necessary to protect their sexual and reproductive health from HIV and other sexually transmitted infections and from unintended pregnancy.
Provide knowledge and skills to develop healthy attitude concerning adolescent growth and development, body image, gender, sexual orientation, relationships, marriage, and family.
Promote understanding of sexuality as a normal part of human development.
Ensure pupils receive integrated, comprehensive, accurate, and unbiased sexual health and HIV prevention instruction.
Provide educators with clear tools and guidance.
Provide pupils with knowledge and skills to have healthy, positive, and safe relationships and behaviors.

Education Code 51934, as amended by AB 329 (Ch. 39, Statutes of 2015), requires districts to provide both comprehensive Sexual Health Education and HIV Prevention Education to students in grades 7-12. lt also authorizes, but does not require, districts to provide age-appropriate comprehensive Sexual Health Education prior to grade 7 on any of the topics specified in Education Code 51934. Sexual Health Education taught at any grade level must comply with the requirements of Education Code 51933.

Required Course for Graduation: 2.5 Credits (1 Semester)

Health Science

This course is also designed to meet the state requirement of providing HIV/AIDS prevention that is complete, medically accurate, and free of bias. From state and board approved curriculum, students will obtain accurate information to develop health literacy and lifelong positive attitudes and behaviors related to their personal health. Study will also include community health; mental, emotional and social health; injury prevention and safety; nutrition and physical activity; alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs; growth, development, and sexual health.

The Coordinated School Health Committee is comprised of many stakeholders in the health education community including, California Department of Public health (CDPH) and California Department of Education (CDE).

In conjunction, Prevention First (PF) is the name of a cooperative agreement, financed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, that includes a focus on improving student health. Enhancing student health, in turn, supports improved academic achievement and student attendance at school. PF represents a collaboration between the California Department of Public Health and the California Department of Education.
