What is Transitional Kindergarten?
Transitional Kindergarten (TK) is an exciting, new educational opportunity for children born in the fall. TK offers children with birthdays between September and December a developmentally appropriate curriculum that is aligned with kindergarten standards and is taught by credentialed teachers. TK was created by a new California law called the Kindergarten Readiness Act of 2010 (SB1381). The new law, which took effect in the 2012-2013 school year:

- Changed the kindergarten entry date from five (5) years old by December 2 to five (5) years old by September 1 so that children enter kindergarten at age five (5); and
- Created transitional kindergarten, the first year of a two-year kindergarten experience for students who are born between September 2 and December 2.
Who qualifies for TK?
A child must turn five (5) years of age between September 2 and December 2 to enroll in the program.

Where will TK classes be offered?
TK classes will be held at the schools listed below. TK classes will be the same length of day and have the same number of students as regular kindergarten.

What are the benefits of Transitional Kindergarten?
Transitional kindergarten will give 120,000 more children each year an additional year of preparation so that they are more prepared to learn and succeed in traditional kindergarten. Research shows beginning kindergarten at an older age improves a child's social and academic development and provides a significant boost to their test scores, especially for children from low-income families. Children are also more likely to attend college and earn higher wages, according to a Public Policy Institute of California review of 14 recent studies. Transitional kindergarten also helps children build literacy and math skills and provides a foundation for social and emotional development. Transitional kindergarten benefits our children, families and communities.

When and how do I enroll my child?
Registration begins on January 8, 2018. Start registration at your school of residence. Registration packets are available at all school sites. To enter kindergarten or transitional kindergarten, a child must meet the following requirements as established by the Education Code of the State of California, the State Board of Education and the administrative regulations of TRUSD:

To enter kindergarten or transitional kindergarten, a child must meet the following requirements as established by the Education Code of the State of California, the State Board of Education and the administrative regulations of TRUSD:
- PROOF OF RESIDENCY. Acceptable documents are utility bills or payment receipts; rental or lease agreements; property tax receipts; pay stubs; voter registration; correspondence from a government agency; or declaration of residency executed by the parent/guardian.
- PROOF OF AGE. Acceptable documents are a birth certificate, baptismal certificate, passport, immigration certificate, Bible record, or when none of these documents are available, an affidavit from the parent/guardian.
- PROOF OF REQUIRED IMMUNIZATIONS, HEALTH EXAM & DENTAL CHECKUP. Children must have a physical exam and dental checkup their first year of school (Report of Health Exam and Oral Health Assessment forms are included in the registration packet or may be downloaded from the column at left). At the time of your child's health exam, please review the immunization record with your physician to ensure that all required vaccinations have been administered.
What should I do if I feel that my child is ready for kindergarten?
School office staff will enroll students in kindergarten or transitional kindergarten based on the day they turn five. If you feel that your child should be moved to another grades level, please notify the school office staff. The process to promote or retain a student will be addressed after school begins in August and would occur at the school with input from the teacher, parent and other relevant school district personnel.
